Personal reflections
This is one of our top favorite spots in Northern Portugal for so many reasons. First, I think it’s a one-of-a-kind spot where the ocean, river, mountains, and pine forest all meet in one beautiful location, making it an ideal day trip from Porto. When the “right” wind blows, windsurfers and kitesurfers from all over the country come here to catch the waves. It gives off a unique vibe that’s difficult to find elsewhere. If the wind bothers you, you can always go to the river beach, which is generally quiet and calm.
People come out every summer evening to watch the sunset along the waterfront. To make the experience even better, some cafés have DJs playing. And then there’s the Ecovia Litoral Norte trail, which we’ve walked countless times. It’s a pure pleasure—on one side, you have the forest and mountains, and on the other, the rocks and the sound of the ocean, all set against the backdrop of the single Santa Tecla mountain across the river in Spain.
