This is one of my favorite places to take a coastal walk in Northern Portugal. The entire route takes place on wooden boardwalks, or passadiços in Portuguese, and is a peaceful retreat along the beautiful coast. It is well-maintained with rest areas, wind shelters, and even fitness zones, making it perfect for a very active outing. It would be a great option for those who want to escape the busy streets and explore things to do near Porto, including seeing some of the best beaches nearby
Key Attractions
Farol da Boa Nova
This imposing lighthouse is the second tallest in Portugal, standing 46 meters high. Opened in 1927, its light can be seen over 52 kilometers out to sea. You can climb 213 spiral steps to the top or take an elevator for the stunning views. It’s a fantastic spot for both photography and visits. Visits are organized in groups, so it’s a good idea to check the schedule on the official website beforehand.

Capela da Boa Nova
This small chapel, originally built in the 14th century and later restored, is dedicated to Saint Clement, the patron saint of fishermen. It stands perched on rocks, providing a peaceful spot for reflection and an excellent viewpoint.

Industrial and Natural Contrast
One of the most captivating things about this walk is how it contrasts the natural beauty of the ocean and dunes with the Refinaria de Matosinhos, a former oil plant that is right across the road. Some tourists may worry about the industrial zone’s proximity, but the plant closed in 2021, so you can enjoy ocean air. This viewpoint will be particularly appealing to those who enjoy looking at industrial landscapes.

Best Beaches Along the Trail
The trail passes a number of wide, clean beaches, some of which are Blue Flag awarded for their high standard of water quality and environmental credentials. When the conditions are right, these beaches are popular with those who enjoy surfing in Portugal. If you plan to return via the same path (since this trail isn’t circular), you can walk back along the sand, letting the ocean wash over your feet.
Getting There
The trailhead at Praia Azul is easily accessible by car from Porto, just a 20-minute drive via the A28 highway. Depending on your location, you can also use public transportation, with bus stops just a 5-minute walk from the start of the trail, or opt for a taxi to take you directly to the trailhead.
Parking information
There are plenty of parking spots available along the entire trail. Parking is free, and even during the busy summer season, it’s usually not difficult to find a space. (All possible parking locations can be found on the map at the end of the article)

Where to eat
Along the path, there are several cafés and restaurants, many having beautiful ocean views. Here are my top recommendations:
Casa de Chá da Boa Nova
This is one of the top restaurants in Portugal, holding two Michelin stars. It focuses on modern Portuguese cuisine, especially fresh, locally-sourced seafood. The building blends right into the cliff, offering diners stunning views of the sea. Because it’s so exclusive and popular, making a reservation is a good idea.

Xiringuito Beach Club
It is one of my personal top spots. This restaurant is located in front of the Praia do Aterro Sul. It offers Mediterranean dishes, Picanha, pizza, and various cocktails in a super relaxed atmosphere with a view toward the ocean. It is a very popular spot for casual meetings or events. The service is friendly, and the atmosphere is relaxed.
Pé no Mar
At the very end of the trail, you’ll find this great restaurant. The staff here is super friendly and speaks excellent English, which is a big plus. It is an excellent spot for watching the sun go down, with one’s favorite cocktail in hand. Just remember to make reservations and, if the weather permits, request a table outside—or at least one by the window. The seafood here is top-notch, and the full house almost every night speaks for itself.
Personal reflections
Honestly, this is one of my favorite places to walk along the coast near Porto. Every time I want to get away from the city and just be close to nature, I come here. There is just something about the view—the contrast between the factory with its red-striped towers on one side and the untouched beauty of the ocean and dunes on the other—that really gets me.
I also love the variety of people you see here. There are folks out for a run, others just enjoying some light exercise, and when the waves are good, plenty of surfers catch them. Because this trail is part of the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, you’ll often come across pilgrims with backpacks and scallop shells making their way through.
Even though I said the best time to visit is from March to October, I actually love coming here year-round. With the right clothes and a good mindset, it’s wonderful no matter the season. If you have not yet visited, I highly recommend checking it out at least once. The atmosphere is distinctively its own.
